【FINISHED】"Viewing the Moon while Strolling in Hama-rikyu Gardens" Special Opening (updated Oct. 3)

To celebrate jūsan'ya (十三夜, the 2nd Japanese Moon-Viewing Festival), Hama-rikyu Gardens will open until 9 p.m. (last admissions at 8:30 p.m.) from Oct. 5 (Wed.) through 10 (Mon., National Holiday). The garden will be lit up in the evening and various events will take place. We are looking forward to your visit during the period.

Oct. 5 (Wed.)-10 (Mon., National Holiday), 2022
9 a.m.-9 p.m. (last admissions at 8:30 p.m.)


※Garden admission is required before participation in the events.
Naka-no-gomon Gate will be closed at 5:00 p.m. (last admissions at 4:30 p.m.) as usual. Please enter through Otemon Gate after 4:30 p.m.
For the safety of our visitors, some areas will be off-limits after 5 p.m.
Events will be canceled or changed depending on the conditions of the pandemic and also the supply of electricity.
Be sure to check our website or Twitter for updates before you visit the garden.
No reservation is required to visit the garden, but entry will be restricted when the garden is crowded. Some events may require prior application and knowledge of the Japanese language.

Events

1. Viewing the Moon while Strolling in the Evening Garden
Part of the garden will be lit up in the evening. A moon-viewing altar will also be set up.
【Date & Time】Oct. 5 (Wed.)-10 (Mon., National Holiday), from sunset through 9 p.m.
【Viewing Fee】Free of charge (Free participation on that day)

2. Gagaku (=ancient Japanese court music) on the Boat
Three gagaku musicians will reproduce 'Gagaku on the Boat', which is said to be enjoyed by the Shogun in the garden during the Edo period, on a Japanese boat.

(1st Session) 6:00-6:20 p.m.
(2nd Session) 7:00-7:20 p.m.
(3rd Session) 8:00-8:20 p.m.

3. Saké Tasting on Moonlit Nights

4. Tea Ceremony at Matsu-no-ochaya

3. and 4. will be conducted solely in Japanese and knowledge of the language is required for both prior application and participation. Please refer to the Japanese page for details.

5. Moonlit Night Souvenir Photography at Tsubame-no-ochaya
The teahouse, due to be lit up internally with wood-framed paper lanterns, will be specially open for souvenir photography. You can enjoy taking souvenir pictures indoors with your smartphone or camera.

6. Moon-Viewing Special Guided Tours
Participants will not only be guided through the history of the garden, the teahouses around the tidal pond and the moon-viewing custom in Japan, they will also have an opportunity to enjoy the interior of Matsu-no-ochaya, a teahouse not usually thrown open to the public.

7. Limited Sale of Moon-Viewing-Themed Set Refreshments at Nakajima-no-ochaya
Opening hours of Nakajima-no-ochaya, one of the best spots in the garden to enjoy the views around the tidal pond, will be extended to 8:30 p.m. Two types of set refreshments will be prepared specially for the season and this opening: moon-viewing-themed set refreshments and saké & wasanbon set refreshments, available while stocks last!

We don’t accept seat reservations. Visitors might be asked to wait outside when the teahouse is crowded.

8. Booths (Food & Drink, Souvenirs, etc.)
Limited sale of paper lanterns with Hama-rikyu Gardens’ original designs and appetizing “Tokyo Yakimochi” (Tokyo Toasted Mochi), etc. will be held at the booths! It would be fun strolling in the garden with a lit paper lantern in one hand!
