    Sunflower Field

As in the previous year, a sunflower field of approx. 3,800 square meters (close to 40,000 flowers) will be set next to the Ferris Wheel. During the day, the flowers stand tall facing the summer sun, while at night, displayed together with light and artworks, they make an appearance that can only be seen here and now. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to this special sunflower field this summer.

    • Sunflower of “Reconstruction”
Name Origin: Known as “Haruka’s Sunflowers”, sown as sunflowers that symbolize “reconstruction”. “Haruka’s Sunflowers” refer to the sunflowers that bloomed at the site of the home of Haruka Kato, a sixth grade elementary schooler who was lost to the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Neighbors who saw the sunflowers carefully nurtured them, believing that Haruka had come back as a sunflower, and the seeds spread throughout Japan as “Haruka’s Sunflowers”.

  • Producer

    Ou Sugiyama

Sugiyama Ou is the CEO and producer at Shinryoiki Co., where he stands at the intersection of art and technology to create “new experiences = Shinryoiki (trans. ‘new fields’)”.
In 2024, he founded Shinryoiki Co. He is the General Planning Director of the signature pavilion "Inochi no Akashi" (Testimony of Life) at the Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, and Exhibition Director of the Green Expo 2027. He continues to create new experiences and spaces that cross the boundaries of art and technology.
    Producer's message
This summer, this project will unfold at Kasai Rinkai Park, which we have created into a space where people can experience themes such as "people and the environment" and "time and life" in a poetic and physical way.

Located just a short distance from the city center, this park, with its endless expanse of sky and sea, is not only beautiful, but also breathes the rhythms of nature that we tend to overlook in our daily lives, in the presence of the wind, the shifting of light, and the swaying of plants and flowers. This place, where the sea breeze passes through and the seasons change, has the power to make you feel the invisible flow of time and the cycle of life.

By bringing together various experiences of art in this park, we hoped to create scenery that is not just for viewing, but one that gently opens people's senses and allows them to quietly face their inner selves.

When considering who we should invite into the center of this creation, my answer was without hesitation, Tatsuo Miyajima.

Miyajima is an artist who, from the 1980’s to the present day, has been confronting universal themes such as "time," "change," "connection," and "permanence" with a deep philosophy and consistent form of expression. His signature digital counters do not simply inscribe numbers, but have moved people around the world as devices that visualize the blink of life in the midst of constant change and the invisible "time of life."

The blinking is not cold like a machine, but rather has a warmth like the breathing of nature. I feel that the rhythm of the rustling grass, the ebb and flow of the waves, the movement of the sunflowers chasing the sun – such "rhythms of nature" and the "light of time" of Miyajima's works resonate with each other on a deep level.

I believe that when Miyajima's artwork encounters the space of Kasai Rinkai Park, it will mediate the memories of the place and the senses of the viewers, quietly posing questions in them such as "what is nature?", "what is life?", and "what is time?"
It is not only an experience of viewing the work, but also an experience of "feeling yourself" in the landscape.

It is my hope that the scenery we offer this summer, where nature and art intersect, will become a memorable "time" for as many people as possible.

Park Statement

Our goal for Tokyo Metropolitan parks in 2040 is to foster lush greenery for future generations, create attractions that draw people in from Japan and overseas, and contribute to the well-being of each and every person. As we wish to share the new value in parks with all of our users, we have been staging seasonal flower and light displays in certain metropolitan parks throughout the year.

Kasai Rinkai Park is a historic park that was established in 1989 with five zones under the theme of interaction between greenery, water, and people. Together with the neighboring Tokyo Sea Life Park and Kasai Marine Park, the park makes use of its vast site for projects incorporating its unique natural environment. Considering the long history of the area's deep connection with the sea, the park has promoted environmental measures that focus on the habitat of a variety of living creatures, as well as enhancing the seaside as a recreational space. With its connection to the ocean, the source of life, Kasai Rinkai Park will continue to offer a valuable place where the harmony between humans and nature can be felt with the five senses, and people can experience the natural environment while thinking deeply about the future of our earth.
