mapThis parkland used to be premises of the Echigo Takada Clan in the Edo period. In 1896 in the Meiji period, the Iwasaki family, founder of Mitsubishi group, purchased this land and constructed current buildings. It used to be very wide premises in the Meiji period, but now they only have 3 buildings, a western style building, a Japanese house and a billiard house. However, contrast and harmony between western culture and Japanese culture is superb. The designer and the constructer of a western style building and a billiard house is Dr. Josiah Conder(1852~1920), a famous constructer came from U.K. He also constructed some other famous buildings such as the Kyu-Furukawa Teien, the Rokumeikan house and the Nicolai church etc. in Meiji/Taisho periods. Whole premises were appointed as Important cultural assets of Japan in 1999.

mapThis garden is a typical Daimyo garden built in the early Edo period. It is a typical Kaiyuu pond garden, and its plot and layout of masonry around the pond are excellent. The parkland used to be a sea, and was reclaimed in 1658. In 1678, this land became the premise of Mr. Tadatomo Ohkubo, Rojyu(political leader) of the Edo Shogunate. Later in 1876, it became the Shiba imperial villa and was opened to the public in 1924. It was appointed as the Place of scenic beauty in Japan in 1979.
